QUOTE (b00 @ Mar 10 2005, 01:23 PM)
And, the brass players? The rumors are all true, we know how to have the most fun.

Yup yup.

Of course, we still have our little quirks. Like trumpets generally being arrogant jerks. Trombones acted like they were high 24/7 (and i'm sure some of them were). Tuba players were like the brain damaged alcoholics of the group. And the horns... we were the mental-disorder bunch. Kind of like a schizo with ADD and a hint of idiot savant.

But we all knew how to have fun, damnit! laugh.gif

You had more than one horn?!? :o

Nah, we had two horns once. Then the other one graduated. But I was friend with all the manic trumpet players, so it was all good.

I played trumpet for a very short while. I had a little skill with it but my band teacher was a total dick, and blamed us trumpets, me specificaly, for us not doing great at a contest. Even though he's the jack ass that didn't get us in tune and that's what we were marked down for. Oh, well. Everyone needs a fall guy I suppose. So anyway I quit because of him, and didn't pick up another instrument until just a couple of years ago, and the one I picked up was called a Dumbek. Unfortunatly it belonged to a friend so I had to go out and buy a small handdrum. I want a Dumbek (basically it's a mid-sized handdrum) or an even larger handdrum. I love the sounds they make.

Other than that, I've been look for a good set of Pan Pipes to pick up but so far no luck. I'll keep up the search though, I'm sure I'll eventually find them.

Depends on which orchestra I was in actually tongue.gif
School band was either two (highschool) or three (juniorhigh).
In the actual orchestra I played in though - the EYO (Edmonton Youth Orchestra) - we had 8 horns total. Four for each division (senior orch/junior orch), though occasionally we would shuffle people around as the need arose. Getting to play with the senior orchestra was pretty damn cool (if indimidating and extremely difficult!) for us. smile.gif

Now, at band camp... oh babeee! We had like 20 of us running around, plus teachers. One day we made copies of some 16th century or whatever (all I knew is it was OLD) honest to god hunting-horn music, grabbed a bunch of stands, ran out into the courtyard (this was on a college campus)... and just belted out these hunting tunes for like three hours! biggrin.gif
Now that was an experience i'll never forget. We had so many horns playing so loud, you could literally hear the music echoing off distant buildings. Crowds gathered, people stared, and later on we got in shit from other teachers about "making such a racket". laugh.gif
All I know is that felt and sounded so very, very fucking cool. smile.gif

With all the interest shown here, it's surprising that the music forum isn't busier.

I visit the music forum on occassion, but I've most of the discussions are about bands that don't interest me and I don't have a high enough interest, nor knowledge level, to start threads of my own. So I just be quite and stick with a few on going threads. I poke in and out of the other ones, and have even found some decent music that I had never heard of but hell I just need to talk to Psion for that.

For those of you the band stuff in school and debating which group (brass, woods, etc) had the most fun? You're all wrong. It was the metal heads in the back of the class listening to their own music and making fun of all of you that had the most fun biggrin.gif

Very sadly, no. Completely tone-deaf. And nobody will teach me how to play drums.
My musical ability is limited to the opening chord for Smoke on the Water, and chopsticks.

I am muchos impressed with anybody can play.....anything, actually!

Hannah, try playing the piano tongue.gif
unless your so tonedeaf that you cant tell full semitones, you'll have no problems.

/me is mildly tonedeaf but played for 8 years & got pretty good.

I hit random strings on my guitar, if that counts. I'm currently learning, but can't find the time to properly learn the chords yet.

See, piano is something I'm having trouble with! I've played flute for 9 years now, and all of a sudden I'm supposed to have my grade 6 Royal Conservatory in piano, as well as my grade 10 in flute, but man... I'm like in negative grades when it comes to reading piano music. Just reading two lines at once gives me major headaches.

I basically have perfect pitch, so the notes are no problem. And I can play things when I've heard them. But reading treble and bass at the same time kills me. Ugh!

It would have been better to move from piano, on two staves, to flute, with one. That would have made my life SO much easier!

I'm an axeman through and through. Guitar, six years and counting. Also a singer, I sing tenor, have been in a couple choirs in high school (with Jaeda, no less) and I'm also planning on joining a choir this summer when I go back to school at Waterloo. Most of the way I learned, both guitar and voice, was sort of on my own, just having fun. The only formal training I've had with each was a year and a half of guitar lessons, and the one year in the Jazz and Concert choirs in high school. Some of the best fun I've had, though, had a trip to Hawaii with the choir, was most awesome.

HOLY SHIT I POSTED AGAIN!

I played french horn for three years... and I wonder why I got picked on all the time in school...

I've played guitar for the past 7 years... comin up on 8 now I guess... Self taught, still don't know what the hell I'm doing most of the time. I just put my fingers on the neck and strum until it sounds good.

Ok well I guess that's a little exaggerated... I can actually play like Pat Metheny, but you'll never know for sure, will you? UNTIL I GET FAMOUS BITCHES! OOOH YEAH!

I've been wanting to learn drums for the past 3 years but my bum of a friend won't teach me. I'd probably kick some ass at it... But I'll just stick with muh many guitars for now. MWAHAHAHA!

I can also play the skin flute, but don't tell anyone. It'll be our secret.

Hahahaha, Waycos, we left you out, because percussion was never considered part of the band/orchestra. biggrin.gif

Interesting thread...

I've been playing flute since I was 7, passed my grade 5 on it and then gave up lessons, though still dig it out and have a laugh every so often.

I picked up an alto sax when I was 13 and haven't looked back, though I've since switched to Tenor.

Along the way, I've played piccollo, soprano and baritone sax and attempted to learn clarinet. (Uni recently gave me a baritone back to play in windband, woooooo).

Currently own my flute, a 1934 Silver selmer alto, a 1931 Selmer tenor and my weapon of choice, a customised Keilwerth Nickel tenor. (It's gorgeous).

I'm currently supposed to be the best at my uni for tenor playing (though a couple of the alto plaeyrs can kick my butt), got solo place in orchestra this term and sit on first desk in big band.

But my theroy ability is very limited, as is my solo playing (I much prefer band playing) so I didn't take it to a degree level (got a C at A Level), just a hobby for me, though one I hope never to give up.
