My desktop refuses to boot, the problems started sometime last week with it being sluggish and refusing to connect to the internet. However I turned it on this morning and as soon as it reaches the Windows load screen it hits a blue screen and instantly reboots. Whats annoying me is I have no idea whats wrong so I dont know what needs fixing, a little assistance please? biggrin.gif

Hey Paddy, is there any error message from the BSOD that you can read? Can you boot into safe mode? Also what OS are you using?

If you can get onto IRC through another computer I might be able to walk you through it

What Toimisk said: Check the BSOD for any words you might recognise, RAM HDD, Graphics etc.
Also, unplug EVERYTHING except power, mouse, keyboard and monitor / screen, then try again.
And version of Windows helps too, and if its on bootcamp on mac also.

The BSOD flashes for literally less than half a second.

I'm running Win XP, Toi suggested a live Ubuntu boot which works perfectly so it cant really be a serious hardware issue. I'm going to run the ubuntu integrity tests see what that digs up

It's only showing up for a split second because, I'd guess, you've got the default setting of "reboot on BSOD" on XP. Which means you'll never see anything.

Can you at least boot in safe mode (only asking because it wasn't answered. Though likely, since Toi asked, and it's not solved, you can't)? Because it sounds like a display driver issue or something to me. At least, that's what it was last time I had a similar experience with my dad's machine.

I looked STPD.sys up yesterday, apparently its something to do with the image mounting tools. If you boot into Ubuntu, mount your system drive (Places>Hard Drive) and search for it. The safer way would be to rename it to something else, move it to another folder - or if you're feeling rather ballsy, delete it entirely.

New development: I managed to find and rename SPTD using linux, now when I boot into safe mode it lists off a ton of system files and just reboots instantly. Now heres where it gets interesting, I can boot into windows normally and it seems to work perfectly if a little slow.

Try Start>Run>"msconfig"

Look through the 'Startup' entries and google each process to find out what it does, and uncheck the ones you don't want. Do the same with the 'Services' tab, although you'll be needing to check the 'Hide Microsoft Services' checkbox to make sure you don't disable something windows needs to run.

Also fully uninstalling daemontools/image mounting software then running CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clear up any lurking lil buggers left over.
