Reading a zombie-thread on this forum made me think of this. So, I present to you:

THE "WEAPON-OF-CHOICE" THREAD

What weapon would you use, if you needed to defend yourself? And why?

EDIT: Right. although I didn't intend for it to turn out this way, it appears many are using "zombie apocalypse" for their choices. So, that is now the premise for this thread.

Anyway, I'll lay down some ground rules.

The weapon has to be something hand-held, something you could operate on your own (given proper experience), and something that exists in this world.

If you're having trouble thinking of one, here are some japanese weaponry to choose from.

I'll start. My weapon of choice would be a pistol, because it is easy to think with, lighter than other weapons (shotgun comes to mind, as well as katana), and its mere presence is usually enough to subdue a lot of people.

I'd prefer to have a large-barrel six-shooter, like the gunslingers of old, but those guns are heavy, and high-maintenance.

Downsides I could think of to my choice:
A pistol is a killing machine, and I'd have to undergo a lot of mental training to be able to use it seriously.
Having to maintain ammo supply, as well as maintenance to the gun itself.
The sight of a pistol may subdue some, but others may be angered by the sight of one, and I'd end up having to watch my back.
From what I can tell, it's fairly easy to disarm a novice gunman. Which is what I'd be for a while.

Your posts don't have to be the same as mine, but I'm just giving you some things to think about before you make your decision.

Decisions, decisions. I would have to say a metal baseball bat. Lightweight, easy to use, doesn't break easily, and never needs reloading.

I'm stuck between a katana for simple ease of use and practicality and a decent bow (with arrows of course). One is more offensive, the other defensive.

I'm really not a fan of guns, but a bow and arrow with good training would be useful.

I do not jump to conclusions, I took a small step and there they were.

Bow and arrows aren't bad but if I had to choose between them and a gun I would definitely have to go with the gun, more likely you'll get a kill with each hit. Like stated ^ I still prefer baseball bat but .44 Magnum packs a powerful shot for such a little thing.

I've always been partial to dual switch blades. Sure I have to get in all close like, but the resulting mess is just too fun. biggrin.gif

The random length of chain I used to carry around works just as well too.

It really depends on what i want to defend myself against. If it's one person it'll be some kind of gun, if we're talking big crowds I'd want a sword or something else that can't run out of ammo...

Always been a fan of Lever-actions myself; probably something in a .44

- Large magazine
- Medium to high rate of fire,
- Heavy enough can be used for hand-to-hand combat
- Can be scoped for longer distance accuracy
- Can be shortened and turned into a short range pistol type weapon, with the same qualities.
- .44 Ammo would be fairly easy to find, as it is a common pistol round

That would be my choice for a firearm anyways;

A claymore or a machine gun. One's offensive, one's defensive.

I have this wooden sword I bought at the local RenFest. It's about three and a half feet long, hardwood. I once chased a man who stole ALL of my lawn gnomes (I have 15) down the street with it, took back my gnomes, and called the police. He thought I was going to kill him.

I'm a big fan of knives. I like the up close, stealth kill.

I would probably brandish my throwing knives, tactical kukri and tactical straight edge sword.

I always loved the good ol' .50 cal, but you can't really hold it in your hand...the M-60 is a beautiful weapon also, but unless you want to play Rambo, again a pretty big weapon. So I would have to go back to my S&W 41 mag that I used to own, or my S&W Model 469 9mm if I'm going to carry concealed.
Aloha pretty wahine!

Well.. general everyday defensive weapon, I want a bow an arrow. Offensive, I suppose.. a sword. A nice japanese one, but I want extensive training with it.

Zombie apocolypse, I want a shopping trolley upon which I'd mount a variety of sharp pointy things and folded chairs for some sort of security, propelling myself along with a broom. Offensive AND defensive, not to mention fun.

The fork of truth!

Nah, but honestly, the choice of weapon is dependant on the situation. Guns are prob the most efficient, and can often be used as a club if you run out of ammo. Katanas are fun but I'm much better with a staff.
If we are just talking personnality-wise, I would go in weaponless ( I likes my martial arts smile.gif).

I do martial arts, so I'm pretty comfortable with a short stick (less then a meter long). It won't shoot me, and I can grab it anywhere/swing it around without worrying about cutting myself.

Although I have been doing some work with the long stick (or staff) and know the benefits of a longer pole.

So maybe a short stick that can grow longer?
