I wonder if it was so strange, considering some previous recipients... Kissinger and Le Duc Tho springs to mind, especially. Would you want to be associated with them?

Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho were nominated for and received the prize in 1973. Mohandas K. Ghandi was nominated five times between 1937 and 1948, and upon his death in 1948, he never received it. So... Ghandi was long dead by the time that Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho received the Nobel Peace Prize. I'm fairly certain that Ghandi would have been beyond the point of caring.

Point taken.. Still, Ghandi was a magnanimous soul. I'm sure that he wouldn't have minded, either way.
