This could be very addictive: Google is teaming up with board game maker Hasbro to launch a Google Maps version of Monopoly. Monopoly City Streets, which launches Wednesday, allows users to compete in a live, worldwide version of the popular game, creating the biggest Monopoly tournament ever played.

It’s an ambitious venture that we’ll confess to being fairly excited about: players will literally be able to buy any street in the world, and compete with every other player on the “board”. You start with 3 million Monopoly dollars, and can build not only hotels and houses but also football stadiums, castles and skyscrapers, reports the UK’s Guardian. Downing Street in the UK will cost $231,000, while Pennsylvania Avenue will cost $2 million.

The preview site reads:

On the 9th SEPTEMBER, a world of property empire building on an unimaginable scale will be launched! A live worldwide game of MONOPOLY using Google Maps as the game board. The goal is simple. Play to beat your friends and the world to become the richest property magnate in existence.

Own any street in the world. Build humble houses, crazy castles and stupendous skyscrapers to collect rent. Use MONOPOLY Chance Cards to sabotage your mates by building Hazards on their streets.

What the coverage doesn’t mention is the level of involvement Google had here: while in theory this could have been built on the Google Maps API with little input from the search engine maker itself, all reports seem to indicate that Google had a direct role in bringing the game to fruition.

I was thinking about this last night (the game not about the lack of humpity hump) and it may just be a hoax, too many loose ends (how would anybody 'land' on your street etc), and when I just checked the site it was down with no updates on the blog. Just as well, I don't want to go through another 'dry spell'

What I read was that rent would be doled out weekly, not based on people 'landing' on your street, but just by owning the street and building stuff on it.

That said, I haven't been able to get to the site yet. Their blog says the response was so overwhelming that they're having to add servers and what-not. :\

Yeah, I was a little disappointed to find the server not responding thing, but they say they're going to put some new servers and make the thing more able to cope with the milliontudes. I want to own all of where I live, because .. who's going to know about it in Spain the sites all in english... (mu ha ha haaaaa!)
Sorry, white cat petting finished for now.
I'm still looking forward to it, even if it takes a bit longer to arrive. It has to be more interesting than my current on line game thing which is mafia wars on facebook .

The game is up and running now, if a little slow.

I've already purchased the Main Street in my hometown, as well as the streets my and J's parents live on. I wanted to buy MY street, but apparently my town is too small to be worth programming into the game.

Currently erecting buildings in my hometown that would block out the sun if they actually existed.

I registered and promptly attempted to find a street in my hometown. But of course, all the good streets in San Francisco were either pricey or taken. That's what I get for growing up in a city, I guess.

I bought some streets in the neighborhood, but some of the bigger ones were already taken. The site is also very slow and giving me lots of errors. I hope they'll fix that soon.

Oh, and apparently the street I live on is too small for even the smallest building. I guess I'm homeless then.

Now I can't decide what's worse...having your street not exist in the game, or wasting your money on your street when there's not enough room to build on it.

I'm getting a kick out of trying to buy out my hometown, but I've got to admit that it annoys me that once I've spent my money for the day there's nothing else I can do until tomorrow. :\

For those who were pissed about not being able to get online and get a chance at your hometowns, after they fix the bugs and cheating issues, they're planning on resetting the whole thing sometime next week. I'm a bit pissed, as I was doing genuinely well and was one of the first people to register, but I guess I see the point in resetting since lots of people either couldn't get on or had their accounts inadvertently stolen.
