I think it's about time to replace my linux server for a faster one with bigger drives. The question though is what version of linux should I use? My current server runs on suse 8.2, because it's old and I didn't bother updating recently.

* I'll be using the computer to run an ftp server and an IRC server.
* I want it to *NOT* install X on it, commandline only.
* And if possible I want a very forgiving C compiler, because I've had problems compiling the latest ircd in the past where I actually had to change some of the C code before it would compile properly. Since I suck at C, I would like to avoid that in the future.
* Finally, I sometimes buy uncommon hardware, so something that recognises more than just the most sold stuff would be nice.

Keeping those 4 points in mind, what distro would people suggest I use? There's so many around that I have no idea what would fit my requirements best.

I'd start with ubuntu. You can do a no-X install, it has good support for hardware, and the package repository is pretty complete and well maintained.

Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had.

I concur, ubuntu is crazy easy to install and use (apt-get ftw!). There's Debian that you can go with as well (ubuntu is based off of it), but from my experience with it, most things aren't as easy as ubuntu. I've heard some praise for Gentoo, but you'd need more time to get everything setup.

It's mostly preference when it comes to a distro, so go ahead and try out some stuff.

Thirded for Ubuntu. But if you didnt need strange hardware support, Id go as far as an older version of Red Hat or Debian.

But I would probably step up from Ubuntu if you needed a lot more functionality to Debian

I don't agree with certain ubuntu defaults, but I guess it'll do. First linux distro I use that doesn't have a c compiler installed by default though, that was a bit odd.
