Dan Lim will be producing a Tomb Raider reboot. This is his quote and where he wants to go with the movie:

QUOTE
"We're rebooting Lara Croft...It's a great origin story that we're going to tell, a very character-oriented, I would say more realistic than the past Lara Croft movies...It's not full-on action. I would say it's like Terminator, it's character driven action. For me, the Lara Croft games and movies have gone a little too action-oriented. I wanted to have action, but with character."

Is this the state of movies today where even something "Character driven" has to be in an action setting? What are you thoughts?

Didn't know Tomb Raider needed an orgin story? Who knew. biggrin.gif

If it warrants it, then yeah, some action can be in a character driven story. But if you're going out of your way to put in some 'splosions, then me thinks that you've hit the bottom of the barrel, and very close to hitting the bottom of the bottle...or something.

Jump on the reboot bandwagon! (I'm not saying its a bad thing, BB & ST were awesome) I wasn't aware the Lara Croft character had anything to delve into, she's just boobs with guns. (again, not complaining tongue.gif)

He is right, based on the classic 'action' movie I wouldn't say the original Terminator is one. It is driven by the characters and the emotions that Sarah Connor goes through with what is going on, what she finds out, who she has to be and etc. There are a few actions scenes, but it is infact a character driven movie.

I believe he's actually talking about the new Terminator, since he is a Producer on that.

I think that's an incredibly narrow focus to claim that's representative of all movies. Big budget summer tentpoles? Maybe.

When people like this say "character driven" it's a completely empty pr buzzword. It's like calling something "dark and edgy". Take a look at Mr. Lin's resume, it's hardly one that would garner much respect. Most of what he does is find pre-existing material (foreign films, comic books, video games, etc) that can be turned into a marketable film. He's a business man, not a storyteller.

There are plenty of fantastic films that are being made that are truly character driven, that don't rely on big budget action to reach the widest audience / lowest common denominator. Personally, I think it's odd that people complain about a dearth of quality in film today, yet only cite a handful of films that exist primarily to make money for a studio. There's nothing wrong with preferring action movies to more traditional dramas based on life experience, though I do think less of these people on an intellectual level. You just need to accept the fact that it's a genre that is not going to be as deep or artistically complex as other genres, and thus the films will more often than not be pretty trite and dumb.
