Dan Lim will be producing a Tomb Raider reboot. This is his quote and where he wants to go with the movie:
QUOTE
"We're rebooting Lara Croft...It's a great origin story that we're going to tell, a very character-oriented, I would say more realistic than the past Lara Croft movies...It's not full-on action. I would say it's like Terminator, it's character driven action. For me, the Lara Croft games and movies have gone a little too action-oriented. I wanted to have action, but with character."
Is this the state of movies today where even something "Character driven" has to be in an action setting? What are you thoughts?I think that's an incredibly narrow focus to claim that's representative of all movies. Big budget summer tentpoles? Maybe.
When people like this say "character driven" it's a completely empty pr buzzword. It's like calling something "dark and edgy". Take a look at Mr. Lin's resume, it's hardly one that would garner much respect. Most of what he does is find pre-existing material (foreign films, comic books, video games, etc) that can be turned into a marketable film. He's a business man, not a storyteller.
There are plenty of fantastic films that are being made that are truly character driven, that don't rely on big budget action to reach the widest audience / lowest common denominator. Personally, I think it's odd that people complain about a dearth of quality in film today, yet only cite a handful of films that exist primarily to make money for a studio. There's nothing wrong with preferring action movies to more traditional dramas based on life experience, though I do think less of these people on an intellectual level. You just need to accept the fact that it's a genre that is not going to be as deep or artistically complex as other genres, and thus the films will more often than not be pretty trite and dumb.
