Im going to say this

IT WAS FREAKING COOL!

It had a lot of really nice elements from the prequel books (I have one) and elements of the original series.

I know I will probably buy this but what has others thought of it?

One of the best sci fi movies to come out in the recent year.

"This isn't where I parked my car." Cooper?, Eurotrip

"You're the diet coke of evil..." Dr. Evil, Austin Powers 2, The Spy who Shagged me.

"Cause I had mine out while I was looking at yours!" J.D., Scrubs

"Maybe it's time you grew up a little" - John
"I'm pretty certain I'd rather not - Furthermore, Poop." - Rayne

"Number 8 - Men have two emotions: Hungry and Horny. If you see him without an erection, make him a sandwich." SilentNight

"If I can find a bottle of tomato sauce, I've got the place to myself. Americans watching won't get that joke but Fuck 'em. LEARN! WE know what a sidewalk is." Adam Hills

It was a great movie but not "This year's Iron Man." I was pulled to watch it by my friends on the day it came out in theaters everywhere. It was a lot better then I thought it was going to be but there were those quote moments when I felt that they put to much emphasis on famous quotes. I especially liked the beginning.
A constant internal struggle between that which I am and that which I have been taught to be.

Aside from the "time travel, really?" feeling I had when I saw what excuse they used to explain any inconsistencies, I really liked this movie. Couldn't they have found a slightly less overused plot device?

Think about it though, with the number of movies out there a lot of plot devices have been used to death. There is bound to be some overlap when dealing with ways to make movies work.

Two movie writers are discussing movie ideas, one says "In this scene, <character a> and <character b> are talking and..."
"Wait!" exclaims the other. "Talking is used waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much in movies these days. Let's do the whole thing in interpretive dance!"

See how silly that is? Some things have to be done, and in this case time travel was the best way to do it. It allows for a significantly advanced enemy while still keeping things familiar.

Gache - could you imagine a Star Trek done with Interpretive Dance? I would totally see that tongue.gif

I felt it was solid though - it stood on its own enough to make it enjoyable for non hard cores, but there was bits in there for the hard cores

Meanwhile, I smiled and giggled with every famous line...

I like that it was done in a way that you didn't have to be a hard core trekkie to understand or enjoy it.

it was the easiest and least complicated way to open the door for a whole bunch of new startrek movies. After this one, the entire canon from the original series to voyager / ds9 have been changed smile.gif

And to be honest, if they make em all as good as this one... i'm a fan (well i was already but hey).

I just got back from watching it, I was very impressed. Zachary Quinto plays an excellent young spock and overall the film is very well cast. 2 thumbs up.

Aside from the continuity f*ck up (which I hate), a very good movie.

The beginning is a very important part because to me, it shows exactly what Starfleet and what a Starfleet Captain must be/do. It really touched me and I'm so glad they showed it.

The acting was very good, everything looked amazing. 9/10

They had to do the continuity fuck up though. It was the best way to make this a new series of movies because any other way, all the trekkies would be up to their ears in complaining about inconsistencies. Time travel's annoying, sure, but I think it was the best decision for this movie.

I understand the need to do it for the movie but that screws up every other tv series taking place after that. I dunno, I'm probably just stuck in my old ways (Hmmm I'm having issues expressing myself in english this morning) but I'm not a fan of that idea and how it affects the whole ST history.

Seriously, no Vulcan? Wtf??

I agree, this was an excellent reboot. The series really needed one in order to give these new actors a chance to make own the characters. The only character I didn't really care for was Chekov. His accent sounded very fake. Loved Bones and Scotty. Kirk grew on me. When I first saw him, I didn't think he could be Kirk, but when he sat in the captain's chair the first time, he just looked right. Spock smiled and smirked a bit much, but I just figured, he's young, he hasn't fully conquered his emotions yet. He'll work his way into being more stonefaced.

I saw this touched upon above but didn't see it in detail (I could have missed it thought), and that's the time travel thing. While I thought it was kind of stupid that they said, "Hey, this is an alternate reality where anything can happen! Because time travel made it happen!" I think it was indeed for the best. This movie doesn't change anything from TOS, TNG, DS9 and as much as I hate to say it Voyager and Enterprise. It's pretty much set in its own pocket universe.

I think the time traveling premise they're working with is called String Theory, but I'm not entirely sure, so don't flame me if I'm wrong.

Back to the movie itself. I walked in having low expectations but was ecstatic coming out. I was completely blown away by how solid of a movie it was. Not sure where they could go from here, but hey, this one was fantastic.
