They're testing it in 2 cities first, but it looks like a pretty good idea.

AT&T will begin selling netbooks with integrated wireless Internet cards, selling them for as low as $50 — with a data plan contract, of course. The rollout will begin in Atlanta and Philadelphia.

AT&T is also looking to enter the e-book market, according a company exec quoted by Bloomberg at the recent trade show in Las Vegas hosted by industry organization CTIA Wireless:

The Kindle, which lets users download books over Sprint Nextel Corp.'s network, has done a "phenomenal job," and AT&T wants to be part of that market, Glenn Lurie, head of emerging devices at AT&T, said today. — Bloomberg.com

Verizon has also expressed interest in entering the e-reader fray, saying it had been approached by five (undisclosed) companies interested in a wireless connection like that of the Kindle.

The takeaway: AT&T's netbook announcement, along with an earlier one from Verizon, suggests these tiny laptops are increasingly being positioned as much as an additional mobile network-connected device as a supplemental computer.

It's unclear if the AT&T exec's remarks on e-readers are anything more than an off-the-cuff response to the success of the Kindle. But the notion of another carrier joining Sprint — the carrier the Kindle uses — in the e-book business is intriguing. Wireless access to content is one of the most compelling aspects of the Kindle, giving it the edge over competitors like the Sony Reader (which we've covered in the past). The other is access to the huge library of e-content — Amazon's 250,000 Kindle titles in the case of the Kindle. And to offer a compelling option to the Kindle, AT&T, Verizon, or any other carrier, will need to find a content partner with a competitive library. It isn't immediately clear who might be able to offer that (perhaps other than Sony, with its Reader library.)

I guess they're finally catching up to Europe. Over here cell phones are so common they give away all kinds of stuff if you buy one with a subscription plan. Game consoles, laptops, LCD TVs, I've seen all of those.

What's a "data plan contract"? An internet service plan, or something? Or like an internet/phone/TV package? Or am I way off?

It's for internet on your cell phone. You usually can either get a plan for a certain amount of data a month, or an unlimited plan for a lot more money.

Right, thanks... And you say we already have these 50$ laptops in Europe? Can I get the specs on these anywhere? And what stores sell these in Europe?

Don't know whether we have those particular laptops, but I've seen several deals where if you take a two year subscription (the kind with lots of "free" minutes and thus a higher monthly rate) you get a laptop for free.

In England and possibly mainland Europe you can buy USB dongles from mobile operators that allow you to use the internet anywhere with mobile coverage these go for about £15 a month with around a 10gb allowance. On top of that you'll need a netbook which unless you got one free with a contract phone will run you about £150.

Good to hear that more companies are entering the e-reader market. Hopefully that'll make the prices drop a bit.

okay.. this sounds good.. but what about the price of the e-books to download? Or is there supposed to be a selection of `free/available` content?

I'm actually surprised at this.. we still can't (here in Canada) point our cellphones at the vending machine and get a beer (like in certain asian countries)..but now they're marketing e-readers?
Aren't there apps you can get for your cells that do that?

The takeaway: AT&T's netbook announcement, forth with an beforehand one from Verizon, suggests these tiny laptops are more getting positioned as abundant as an added adaptable network-connected accessory as a added computer.
