I was asked in my first topic ever...What is your taste in movies?

So I looked around the room at all my collection of DVD's. What I learned is I must be truely strange ...or am I?

Collection wise this is what I see:

Home Movies, Dr. Katz, MST3K,Monty Pythons, Mummy Series, Star Treks, Sam Rami's. including darkman, all the evil deads, army of darkness, spiderman, Zombies. Harry Potters, Star Wars, LOTS of WW2 movies, Xmen, Batman's (all), Lots of Jet Li, ChowFat's, Samurai, Wallace & Gromit, Thomas the Tank Engine. (Ringo and Carlin) Clerks, Rocky's, All the Battlestars up to the last season, Star Gate's, Dog Whisper, Rescue Me, Josh Berstein's Discovery series, Monster Quest, History Channel's, UFO Hunters, Top Sniper,Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Jackie Chan's--love the old Drunken Master, Avatar, the last air bender, Sponge Bob Square Pants, Family guy-(1 and stewie only) all the Pirates of the Carribean movies..hell all Johnny Depp movies.

I started collection Brad Pitt movies from the cheap bin. I like Meet Joe Black but most of his stuff was kinda boring to watch before he started stripping down. blush.gif Old School WWE Character DVD's paperbag.gif

Then we hit the Anime shelves... wub.gif
Shin Chan's, Ai Yori Aoshi, Azumaga Daioh, Princess Yucie, Fruits Basket, His and Her Circumstances, Excell Saga, Big O, Gungrave, Patlabor, Escaflowne, Carmartie High, All Gundam's, All Robotech and Macross, Bleach, Naruto, Inuyasha, Initial D, RahXephon, Full Metal Alchemist, Avatar, the last airbender, Zone of Enders, Samauri X, Rurouni Kenshin. Death Note, anime and live action movies (L is voiced by Gaeta on BSG)--if you couldn't tell my my screen name..I like Anime. blush.gif

And just about every damn thing Disney made....and all things Winnie the Pooh. prop.gif

Now some one asked how could they recommend Star Trek or Wolvine because they didn't know "my movie tastes"...

My answer is "I like Good Movies...no matter how bad they are!" rofl.gif

Apparently I "don't look" like someone that would have this collection a-s people are always saying that... unsure.gif
I really need to ask what they mean.. shifty.gif what if they say I look like I'd have a porn collection? dry.gif

I think the last dvd I bought was TDK. I'm pretty much not going to buy another dvd, or movie I should say, until I get a BluRay player. I think it's also interesting that the movies we, or at least I, consider the best movies aren't necessarily the most rewatchable movies and so they aren't being purchased. I absolutely loved There Will Be Blood, but I'll probably never watch it again. Most of my movie watching is still in the theater, or when something is on HBO, rented, or pay per view. It's much rarer that I put on a dvd, as I'd almost always rather see something new than see something I've already seen.

I think I'm pretty diverse, although I don't like romances (unless there's also action or something involved), dramas, and very few thrillers.

If you look at my and J's movie collection (and it's rather large) you'll see things like Die Hard and Predator, both the cartoon and live-action Transformers, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, The Mummy and Pirates of the Caribbean, Spiderman, Ghostbusters, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a bunch of anime, a bunch of Disney flicks (mostly the older cartoons)....you'll see Seven and The Last Samurai, and you'll see Jurassic Park and the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You'll see all the Friday the 13ths and Nightmare on Elm Streets, and you'll see Big Trouble in Little China.

I could go on for hours, but the basic message is that most people look at our movie wall and think, "Jesus, you've got classics and you've got crap...what don't you watch?" tongue.gif

We've got a pretty varied collection. I'm not in front of the collection right now, so off the top of my head... For TV, we have the complete runs of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly, Lots of Trek from all its incarnations, though no complete sets, all seasons of Home Movies, Dr. Katz, Futurama, Arrested Development, Wonderfalls, and Action. For movies, we have the X-Men and Spider-Man movies, a couple of different versions of the LOTR movies(they kept re-releasing with different stuff...), all of the Bourne movies, the original release Star Wars trilogy, the Indiana Jones series (minus the latest one). Then there's movies like Blast from the Past and Bowfinger, lots of Alfred Hitchcock, lots of Cary Grant (Houseboat, Bringing up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, My Favorite Wife, many more), the Thin Man series (love Myrna Loy and William Powell), lots of 50's era sci-fi/horror (basically, if atomic radiation causes an ordinary animal or plant to become dangerous, that's a movie I want to see!), pretty much everything Pixar has released, lots of Disney too (hey, we've got a 10 year old), some great 80's movies like Better Off Dead, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club...

I know I'm leaving out entire genres. We really like movies, and we don't have any premium cable channels.

My DVD collection is so varied that my lists would be just as long as everyone else's. Mostly as an aspiring screenwriter, I find myself watching all kinds of stuff...even stuff I don't want to watch. Mostly because I'm trying to figure out why it was produced and how to get my stuff out there. I enjoy pretty much everything but Chick Flicks and watch a lot of Indie Films.

I think as much as people, myself included, like to think that they're diverse in their film tastes, they're actually pretty biased. Our responses, box office records, and I'm sure the home libraries of many people reflect a strong preference for action / adventure , and comedy. Speaking beyond this thread, my impression of a lot of forum members are tastes that lean in the action/adventure category, furthermore very genre specific. Sci-fi and fantasy definitely pop up more here than say war epics, espionage, or a good old treasure hunt without any supernatural influences.

As much as people complain about the quality of the big Hollywood blockbusters, they're the type of movies I see most often discussed here compared to your more straightforward slice of life dramas, or movies that don't fit neatly into a familiar category.

I feel I should comment that I'm guilty of this myself. I was pretty disappointed by my own response after reviewing my dvd collection. Probably my two favorite movies from the past year were Rachel Getting Married and the Wrestler. Neither I saw in theaters due to how inconvenient doing so would be, and to be honest, I don't know if I would purchase them on dvd or bluray. I do in fact feel a little guilty that I didn't support either of these films financially at all, I simply watched their Oscar screeners.

I think there's definitely a divide, for me at least, between movies I want to see and movies I want to own. A certain replayability issue. Now while I might not want to spend $20 on these movies for a bluray, I would gladly pay $5 for a digital copy that could be viewed in hd on my tv and stored in something like a tivo or Apple TV.

I have a playstation 3 so I've had a blue ray for awhile but the cost of the "average" movie isn't worth it. Now if it is something I really really like I'll buy the Blue ray version...so far that hasn't happened. I rent them. I like to hit Walmart after midnight the morning of a blockbuster's release...they are normally 15 and under here and sometimes have the freebies. All the pirate movies gave t'shirts for the first couple hundred bought.

What I have discovered by everyone's posts.

Someone has my: Indiana Jones....Jarassic Parks...and gasp..all of my Lord of the Rings box sets...Guess I'm going to pay a visit to my nieces house this weekend! assassin.gif

Is there much of a used BluRay market yet? What are those prices typically like?

I wonder whether the software on my computer can ignore region coding on Blu-Ray discs yet. Discs here are quite expensive, so I tend to buy my DVDs when I'm on vacation in the US, but before I do the same with BR discs I'd like to know whether I can actually play them.

IF the 360 can be adapted to play them..then there must be a way to see them on the PC...it will only be time for the geeks to crack it.

Does Walmart.com not ship to NL? Amazon?

I have a pretty nifty HD tv so I really do see that much difference in the picture quality between DVD and Blue ray. It does make movies that are mostly CGI look awesome but the average movie doesn't really gain much over the TV quality itself. Poor quality DvD's have a slight improvement but again..so does a good quality tv.

One thing the PS3 does is to improve the image of old games. Final Fantasy 8 looks freakin awesome.

There is one movie I've been hoping to find..MST3K The Deadly Mantis..I don't even know if they released it.

I can tell my drive to be region A (I think that's what BR calls America) but then I have problems renting movies here. So I will only buy them once I know there's a software solution. Anybody have a crap US BR disc they don't need anymore? smile.gif
