I'm old. I'm a geek. I don't like crowds. I don't like to get out. I especially don't like to get out to waste my money on bad movies and highway robbery popcorn/cola prices.

So...I'm counting on you guys.

I have deep reservations about the new Star Trek ovie..I have heard about the plot.

One that jumps to mind is "I didn't base "my" kirk on William Shatner's character. rolleyes.gif

I already enjoy the commercials for Wolverine. I have not heard the plot but one can assume.

I know both movies have opened in New Zealand.

Either worth the trip outside? and I don't me a flight to Aussie land.

It's actually cheaper to buy the DVD and I have a 42" flat screen which is awesome so I want a REASON to leave my PJ's to go out!

I will go out in a blizzard for Harry Potter. ...see the news article..one of Malfoy's side kick got pulled over with lots of bags of MJ. and apparently at home there was a healthy little garden! He truely is a magic man!

Alas...I am getting old...don't like crowds...broke as hell...but I am likely going to see both of these movies in the theater.

Why?

1) I'm an Old School Trekkie since as long as I can remember. Grew up watching TOS. prop.gif

2) I adore Wolverine and Hugh Jackman is perhaps the only actor I currently adore as much as Johnny Depp. drool.gif

A little piggie told me ST will be playing in Imax not too far from my work. I am SO there. good.gif

I've seen 1, maybe 2 X-men movies? Meh. A hot, hairy man is not enough to make me go watch. Though I do love me some Liev Shreiber... brows.gif

I'd say wait it out.

No offense, but it's kind of insane to ask a bunch of people who have not seen either movie to tell you which will be better. You'll have just as much luck with tarot cards.

I say wait till both films have been released and reviews have come in. If you have a trusted source for reviews you find you typically agree with, go by what they say. Since you started this thread though, I'm going to assume that you don't. I'd say use a site like rotten tomatoes as it compiles many reviews for a general consensus.

Waiting it out will also ensure smaller crowds, and it would also help to go to a matinee as they're less crowded and cheaper.

I also think it'd help if you gave us an idea of your tastes. What are your favorite movies, and especially what are your tastes within the genre. Knowing someone loved a movie like Superbad doesn't really give you an idea of what they'd think of sci-fi or adventure flicks.

Joe Loves Crappy Movies does a good job reviewing movies without any real sense of bias or enjoyment in just a straight out bashing like some sites.

Since she mentioned the movie has already been released elsewhere in the world, I think she's looking for people from NZ and Australia to tell her if it was good. That's just what I thought.

We've just been commenting on which we want to see.

Both points are well taken. I'm not quiet as old as star trek but almost.
Love Depp, met him a a kid..(him not me) There are lots of Depp look alikes around here, they are just farm boys.

Because I'm old school trek....If-it-sucks-i'll-be-killing-tribbles-mad-I-have-been-a-klingon!

Why post here I was asked and insulted I believe and it was answered beautifully----------

Hello Aussie Land!

Trek rumors online do not abode well for the movie....see 'Cloverfield'

Kevin Smith talks about how Hollywood doesn't get that Gendre's have histories/storlines that have fan followings that are well versed on that said history and you can't just go and change the fundamental without destorying your fan base..he used Superman as his example.
What scared the crap out me is having the main actors saying they really didn't know Star Trek and wouldn't base thier character on anything other than how they felt. I hope Nimoy doesn't feel that way.

What type of movies do I enjoy? I love a good cheesy movie. I have almost all of Sam Rami's early movies..love me some Bruce. I ever every released version of Evil Dead so it's not my HIGH standards in question here.

The New Fast and Furious is not a bad movie but I liked FNF-Tokoyo Drift better.

I-go-support-the-Anime-movies

I just don't want to see more characters I love destroyed by Hollywood, I have no doubts Shawn of the Dead knows his scotty...and doesn't want to be boo'd at home.

Well 2 things to consider.. the movie X-men and Wolverine have been quite different from the comic and cartoon versions.

JJ Abrams is doing the Star Trek movie, and is reinventing Kirk, and he's trying to include more sex, which as far as I know was never a part of Star Trek.

Kirk was a space-pimp. He was getting between the legs of every color skinned alien broad he came across. The show even featured the first biracial kiss on tv.

I've heard the new movie described as Star Trek for people who aren't already fans, which I'm completely cool with because I have at best a passing knowledge of the franchise and no real die hard feelings.

Seeing a kiss.. and having a full on nude sex scene are two different things.

Well that's kind of it being a product of the time. They might not have shown him actually bedding them, but there was definitely a lot implied. Kirk has space herpes.

A sign of the times or selling out? aka, throwing it in there to draw viewers because they can't put something of quality out?

I meant the lack of explicit sex in the 60's show was due to the times.

And what can I say, I like movies with boobies. A little sex isn't going to turn me off so long as she's hot.

But there have been plenty of Star Trek movies and TV shows without any of it.

As my wife put it while watching the trailer in the theatre, "They're trying to sexify the geekiest thing ever?"

I have absolutely no evidence of any kind whatsoever to back this up, but I think the Trek series have been progressively upping the sex over the years.

While I cut my teeth on TOS re-runs, I will say that I still would nail Picard over Kirk any day.

And while I'm no comic dork (which is probably why I enjoyed the Xmen movies) Wolverine beats them both.

So what you are saying is you like the strong, dependable type!

In the TOS I would have rather nailed Spock, but he was a challenge..Kirk..a ho.

I think the non spoiler post have been hinting at reasons WHY I am having "a bad feeling" about the Star Trek movie.

So if we like Sisko does it mean we have a God complex? ...Possibly we like men who can cook?

I'm going to say my biggest fear in ALL re-packaged franchises....Time Travel...even this months comic is dealing with the cheese plot device.

I happen to KNOW I will win the Star Trek trophic of biggest Treekie in the Forum and it ain't just cause I played paint ball with William Shatner!

True story....At A Trek Convention in Indianapolis at which I was there so that my son could see "Bartley and LaForge" I was pulled aside by a very nice looking amazingly tall reporter, a very witty black woman, surprising not sticking out at at TrekCon. I was in newspaper and a small bit on TV. Only at the end of the interview did I realize how good my Klingon Costume was...she thought I was black too. I thought she was calling me sister as in Convention/Klingon stuff. My only give away is the look on my face when I realized this Celtic/Gaelic desendent was mistaken for a black woman.
My crews first comments were "HOW?? You have no ASS!"
....it's not wise to say such things to a Klingon woman....we break bones showing how much we love you! jester.gif

UPDATE...there is a copy of Wolverine lose on the net. I have *cough* heard it is excellent. fan.gif

(no details but someone really anal could consider ANY hint of information as a spoiler..if this is you..consider yourself warned)

I did get a reply from someone who has seen it..

How was ..w o l v e r i n e ?

Larry the Hobbit says:

Pretty good.

Two things I'm majorly disappointed with though:

1) WTF with them making him afraid of FLYING?????????? They pulled THAT out of their Hollywood asses!

STUPID pointless change

2) They spent way too little time on his childhood....glossed over it in like 45 seconds. It was a NICE 45 seconds though.

The thing I am MOST happy with:

You finally get to hear him say:

"I'm the best there is at what I do -but what I do isn't very nice"

I can't speak for precedence in the comics, but it's at least utilizing established continuity from the previous movies.
