Mind you that's mostly because I have a soft spot for sexy vampires with morals. >.>
But regardless of whether you might love Twilight or think it's the biggest pile of crap to ever flow from a pen, I think saying that Stephanie Meyer 'can't write worth a damn' is ridiculously harsh. Maybe she's not comparative to Stephen King (whom I also happen to love, btw, so not taking sides here), but I think she has a wonderful grasp on the art.
You can't damn an artist just because they don't make the kind of art you like.

I respectfully disagree. she grasps the art about as well as the writer of Eragon, which isn't well at all. She didn't even write about vampires, she created an entirely new mythological creature and masquered it as a vampire.
You want real Vampires, Anne Rice, before she went Catholic.
Just pointing this out, but Stephen King has a fairly negative view about what kids can handle and what they can't. It was awhile ago, but I read in magazine that he didn't let his children watch R rated movies until well, well into high school. I can't decide whether or not I disagree with what he said.

That aside, she has certainly established a great reader base. Sometimes what people think is art is not all there is too it, in the end if it inspires as many people as she has, it is not really someone elses decision to say she is a bad artist. Just because the artistic approach differs from what is important to you.
Let me put it this way. I read the music forums here and see the bands and music everyone likes. A lot of you even say they are so impresive with their music and such. To me those bands are not impresive, their melody and harmonies are very singular without much depth. But they do speak to their audience, which is what matters.
People who are involved in something tend to think that what their view on the art is, is the only one that matters.
There is more to art than the way it is made.
I'll be damned if I'm taking the stairs--the elevator was out of service once, I called in sick - someone with great wisdom.
Clearly you are wrong, proof of this is that you disagree with me.
I'm not crazy, I'm just very creative with my sanity.

EXACTLY.
Okay, so maybe you might think the idea of a 'vampire' sparkling in the sun is ridiculous, but personally I think it's refreshing to see someone do something different and original with the creatures, coming up with a different (if not a little silly) reason for them to avoid sunlight.
Opinions are one thing, but condemning someone for not doing something the way you think it should be done is just plain insane.
I think 'abstract' art is just about the most pointless thing that exists, but I don't go around telling artists that make it that they aren't really artists.

EXACTLY. ...
Actually.. a movie "LifeForce" did a whole vampires are aliens take on the myth and I thought it was awesome. I don't think there's anything wrong with tweaking any myth a bit. There's a webcomic called Last Blood that explains zombies originating from blood starved vampires. I think it's a great idea and they did a good job with it. In the end, it's all fiction.

Everyone gets what they want. It's basically happily ever after. Bella gets to be a Vampire and have sex with Edward but AFTER they're married (barf) and the stupid Native American werewolf gets to have sex with Bella's half vampire daughter when she gets older woo.

And that is why I don't like the series.
I understand myth tweaking, I do, but... if you give a mythological creature different aspects, well it stops being a mythological creature and something else. What she did to the genre of vampires is like making a guy every third sunday turn into a badger and still call it a werewolf.
Everybody has their own takes on stuff like this, and by all means adjust what you want, but if in adjusting you create something new, don't pretend it is the same thing. I think she may honestly have had something going if she had labeled her version of vampires as something other than vampires.
Why do you find him an atrocious writer? I think the quality of his works have suffered since his accident, but I don't thin in any meaingful sense you could point to him and say his craftsmanship is bad. I would argue the exact opposite, his writings are chilling and powerful. The stand had me going pretty well through the plague part of it. Hell, there is evidence that columbine and several other shootings may have been influenced (accidently) by king over a book he wrote(now no longer in print at his request). He is definately an iconic writer, and any criticisms he has I feel we should probably hold with some respect.
Except when it makes no sense, and is tauted as being good. I put Eragon in that category also, though thankfully Meyers didn't plagiarize unlike paolini.
Note: apologies for any typos, my keyboard still no likey the forums.
