My old iPod died on me, so now I'm in the market for a new one. I was looking into getting an ipod touch when a friend of mine says he knows a guy who knows a guy (not exactly how he put it, but you'll catch my meaning) who can hook me up with a 2nd gen. 32gb touch for half off the retail price.
The catch, it's an open box item. It looks ok, no scratches, powers on, etc. So I looked up the model number the guy gave me (not sure where he got it from) and it's for the 8gb version.
So I ask him about it and he says, "Oh, it was an 8gb, but apple refurbished the returned one into a 32gb model, so it's 32gb."

So my question is, has anyone known apple to do this in the past, and is it even really possible to do that?

Sounded like it to me, too. The player itself said it had 31 odd gigs of space left, but I had heard of people reprogramming flash memory (not the technical term for it) to say it was more than what it actually was.

Also, I dug a little deeper and found it is possible to install more flash memory into the touch, but it takes someone who would really know what they're doing and would cost almost as much to purchase and install said flash memory than the cost of the touch itself.

On the other hand, Look at Craigslist. You might be able to find good deal for getting a new one. My brother got his shuffle on craigslist and there wasn't anything wrong with it.

Yeah, I thought of craigslist too. Problem is, where I live everyone wants retail price for just a used one. But I'm gonna keep looking, cuz new things pop up all the time.

Yeah, if you live in a big urban area, you have to stayed glued to craigslist for days to find a deal. And when you do find one, someone has inevitably beat you to it. Sometimes it's much more trouble than it's worth.

that is totally true. Either that, or they claim they've moved to manchester so to just wire them the money, when in fact no such person exists.
