I'm trying to edit AVI footage of my little boys 1st Christmas.
Anyone know of a good (free) AVI editor?

Very funny.
I did try that, but didn't like the idea of downloading multiple programs down onto my Mother-in-law's computer tryinf to find a decent one that worked.
So I thought I'd ask for a recommendation.
Now that we've established that I can work google, has anyone got any helpful suggestions?

Lifehacker's results are much better than relying on Google, mostly because they've mostly tested the programs, and if you check through comments, usually you'll get either a bunch of opinion's on the program, or recommendations for better programs. Haven't had any reason to edit videos myself, but I can almost guarantee you'll find something useful in there.

Depends what you want to see done. Simple effects and such are common and the programs - cheap. If you want to pay, that is (I've been thinking how to hint this, as I don't know how piracy ideas stand in this forum. So just to be safe - I ain't promoting piracy(fullstop) ).

So what do you want to do then with the footage? Crop here and there simply?

Pretty much.
Maybe put in some music if I'm feeling ambitious.
Not looking to pirate software, but I know some folk out there offer these kind of things for free.
