So I signed up for Tor's free weekly e-book e-mail, and a nice and surprising piece of fantasy literature appeared in my inbox a few weeks ago. It's called "Darkness of the Light", and is apparently the first book (published in 2007) of a series called the Hidden Earth Chronicles.

It's the first major piece of fantasy work by Peter David, who previously mostly did book adaptations of series and TV episode scripts. While I won't say he's approaching the level of Goodkind or (the late) Jordan, it's a very intriguing piece of work I'd recommend people buy.

I'll try not to say much, but it revolves around the near extinction of mankind by exiles from another dimension - who oddly enough resemble races from our mythology (sirens, minotaurs, cyclops, etc., etc.). Which is pretty interestingly implemented, since the book implies that our real life mythology is based on the races who formed the Second Wave of exiles...which would've been during the Roman Empire days. And the near-extinction of mankind because of the war they launched against us in the Third Wave in turn almost ruins their civilization - both on Earth and in the Elserealms.

Buy it. Try it. I think you'll like it. And I find myself anxiously awaiting the second book now.

Is this the same Peter David who is a comic book writer for Marvel. If so, sign me up! I'm not much of a fantasy reader (LoTR being about the only fantasy series I've gotten through), but I'd give this a try.
Read my novel at http://kellenlynch.googlepages.com

The entire first book is posted and now available in an edited form on the front page of my site. Also, I've started posting the short stories. WEEEEEEE! The second book is now posted (it's unfinished, but y'know...it's still free...)

Ever read my work? Think I deserve a couple bucks for my efforts? Good News! I'm now taking donations @ http://kellenlynch.googlepages.com (the paypal donation button is at the top. You can't miss it). I'm trying to come up with a reward for those who donate over a certain amount.

Yes. It's the same Peter David from Spider-Man, Wolverine, X-Factor, The Incredible Hulk, and Captain Marvel.

I just hope the second book comes out soon and he doesn't die before finishing the series.

i am also on the list for Tor

while I was reading this book I found I enjoyed it while reading it but I never felt like "omg I need to quit doing something else to get back to that book"

so i rate it decent but i am glad it was free.
