I got a new 1 TB SATA drive, with 32 MB disk cache, but when I install it in my computer it only gets seen as a 32 MB disk. Anybody got an idea how to fix that? I tried for hours but didn't succeed.

One of the wonderful new features of some SATA drives (I'm guessing WD?) is that when the mechanical parts have died their write cache is still readable. Have it replaced.

Have you tried formatting it?

Check your bios, or update it as it may not recognize a TB drive.

Yeah, that was my thought, that the controller just doesn't understand the geometry. Either a BIOS upgrade, or another SATA controller should fix it.

I tried a bios update and that didn't work. I'll check how much a SATA2 controller costs and see whether that solves it.

dont bother, most sata2 devices are backwards compatible and will work just fine on SATA v1 controllers (exception is hotplug devices and esata), check if theres a jumper on the drive to cap it to sata1,
you might also want to get the western digital diagnostics utility that can be found on western digitals website and check the drive with that,

Problem solved. I found a program online somewhere that fixes wrong disk sizes. It didn't run under vista but once I dualbooted the computer to XP it changed something in the firmware (as far as I can tell) and suddenly the drive was recognised as 1 TB instead of 32 MB.
