Why is man so fascinated with the coming Apocalypse?

I've just finished one WHORE of a first year at uni, and I've FINALLY been able to lock myself in my room, for hours on end to read.

Do you know what it's like to not be able to read for pleasure for a whole year (I did read Harry Potter when it came out, but then I am human)?

Two books that I delighted in reading were S Kings Cell and D Koontz The Taking. I'm not trying to get you to read them, however I will come and cut your face if you don't.

Both were about the 'end' of the world, where some disaster occurs from which the world will never recover. I'm not going to spoil either one, but my main focus was "What in the hell are these characters doing?"

I mean, sure, surviving is nice. If you're into the whole living until your 70 or 80. But if it's the end of the world, and seventy percent of the population is dying, chances are highly likely that, if you're not caught in the initial attack, be it a meteor, zombies, or rampaging monkeys, you most likely won't last more then a month (Or in D Koontz case, a day).

I'm all for telling the local hottie that I've had a major crush on her for the last however many years, or kissing my family goodbye. Maybe going to say good bye to my best mate, but only if they're within a few hours walk. I mean, if for some reason my Dads out of town on business, I'm not walking to `insert neighboring state here` to tell him I love him. I'll assume he knows and go find aforementioned hottie.

But that's just me. if it was the end of the world, would you want to know you have 12 hours to live? What would you do if you were still alive after the zombies attack? Create a resistance? Join them?

I await your reply.

If its Zombies, Survive while gathering survivers. I refuse to be taken down by some mindless shambling flesh-eating horde.

If it's something else where it's guaranteed that I have no chance, talk to those I care about and talk to the hottie
Winter is Coming

Whilst we draw breath, we stand. Whilst we stand, we fight. Whilst we fight, we prevail. Nothing shall stay our wrath

We understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted, for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things, some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom

I'd pull a Robert Neville and hunker down in a fortress apartment, only I'd do it right.

Is anyone else baffled by the fact that even though he knew that the creatures were hurt by UV light, he didn't rig up a UV light system inside his house? I'd have had them in every corner of every room in the house. Good luck getting in when it's like walking through fire to get to me tongue.gif

Anyway yeah...

First order of business, find a gunstore. Your chances of surviving a zombie attack increase tenfold when you're armed with a ranged weapon. If Resident Evil has taught me anything it's that zombies are pretty hard to kill with combat knives, and if you are unlucky enough to come across something tougher than a bog standard zombie, that knife might as well be a carrot.

Grab a rifle, preferably semi-automatic, a bandolier, fill said bandolier with as much ammo as it'll contain, grab a few 'nades and other assorted weaponry, oh and a sidearm incase your rifle jams. Anything will do, but the more powerful the better. A Raging Bull or a Desert Eagle would be my ideal choice.

After that, head to a drugstore and put together a first aid kit. Attach a belt to the first aid kit's handle and sling it over your shoulder, laptop bag style. You never know when you might need a quick fixup. Sure, zombies in most movies will "convert" you to zombie-ism faster than Tom Cruise converts celebrities to Scientology, but every now and then you see some poor bastard gash himself open on a barbed wire fence or some-such, and the blood trail leads every nasty thing right to him.

From there, find a vehicle and try to escape whatever place you're in that's infested. Avoid car showrooms, those vehicles often only have enough gas in them to get you to a gas station. Best choice in my opinion would be a taxi rank or a bus station. In a post apocalyptic scenario, cars are strewn all over the place, so if you can bash through them then you've got a better chance of getting out without having to resort to hoofing it all over the place.

After that, the real only option is to find a form of communication and try to locate a survivor settlement, if there is one. The nearest military base is probably a good place to look first. Plenty of equipment, vehicles and communications methods there, and should the place be overrun with zombies, they wont know how to use the weapons around them, so picking them off shouldn't be too difficult.

That's what I'd do anyways wink.gif

Heh, much as I'd like to pretend otherwise, I'm reasonably sure I wouldn't be one of the survivors. tongue.gif

If by some luck, I did manage to survive, I'd likely try to make my way to the military base, like KSE suggests.

First I would like to say that I recently finished reading Cell myself and thought it was AWESOME. Hail to the King (yeah, I know, even I can hardly believe that I said that...).

But yeah, I think it would depend on the disaster. If it were something like a huge meteor or something that would ultimately destroy the entire planet in less than a day, I would probably hunker down with J and thoroughly "enjoy" our last hours together. If we had more time than that (say, a week) I'd try and get us home to be with our families as well, both of whom are a two-hour drive from where we are.

If, however, it were something in the lines of zombies....I've gotta say, J and I would probably thoroughly enjoy our fight for survival. >.> First of all, we're both of the mindset of "if I'm going down I'm taking as many of them with me as I can". Now if it were something semi-intellegent, like aliens or something, we might have to go into super-survival mode and make with the ninja-like movements, but if it were zombies in particular, we'd be all about the swords and guns. We don't have any guns, but we'd use our swords to get to guns.

To quote a book of his, "If you're killed by zombies...you should be ashamed of yourself." XD

Yeah I think it would depend on the nature of said apocalypse. For the most part I would see myself doing what I could to survive, if for nothing else than my Catholic guilt and a lingering fear of what's really up with the afterlife.

Something like impending absolute doom in an end of days, Book of Revelation manner; I'd eat, drink and be merry. I would basically just get together with friends and family and have a big ass party. I'd probably blow up my car just to see it blow up. If provoked, and knowing the world was ending, I would likely punch someone in the face as hard as I could. Oh and steal shit. The booze and meat for my "the sky is raining blood" party would be expensive, and honestly, why bother wasting time going to an ATM?

If you're thinking about the movie and not the book (since I have yet to read the book) he did do so, but for the sake of hiding he left it off so they couldn't realize he was where he was. He turned it on right around making all the cars go boom. the dark seekers then climbed the light poles and tore them down before taking serious damage. They then raped his house.

I'm a whore for details.

Now, my own view of the apocalypse is the same as Scarlet's. I'm gonna react to the situation differently depending on how it all goes to hell. Zombies, i'm pulling own all the stops and gonna try and survive at all costs. Nuclear winter? I'm not gonna sit through that shit. I hate cold, and am no comfortable with "assload of radiation."

I'd love to live through a situation that rendered all of civilization in shambles, allowing me to rise to the the top, leading the people to the future as a hero. But thats just me.

(I'd make a church into my personal castle, just because I'm jewish.)

I changed my mind. My family know I love them. Also my Dad is large and would probably attract the attention of hungry zombies. Therefore, I will spend as much time trying to score. I figure my chances are increased as I am one of the few people who'd ditch their families during the Apocolypse. Also, I'm sexy.

Welcome to Australia. Hazard: Lack of Gunstores. bloody american constitution...
Also, one of the first things I noticed in Kings Cell, the main character ditched his swiss kitchen knife as soon as he found a gun. This isn't some cheap video game. You can hold onto more then one weapon. Knives do come in handy. Not just for killing. I'd like to see someone shoot the crusts of their sandwhich, or get a splinter out with a semi.
No, seriously. Look it up on youtube for me.

I did Statistics this year. I'd probably figure out the ratio of dead to zombies, and the ratio of suvivors to zombies, then sit down and wait for said zombies. Go with the flow and all.

I have similar thoughts.

Ok, If the world was ending, which would you prefer? Meteor, Zombies, Nukes, Mutation, Robots?

DEFINETLY zombies, cause like I said, if you're killed by zombies you should be ashamed. Of course they WOULD have to be the "stumbling ones that lack motor skills". Fast, semi-coherent zombies would scare the ever-living bejeezus out of me and send me screaming to the hills.

Seriously though, if I HAD to live through an "apocolypse", I'd absolutely want it to be zombies because I honestly think I'd thoroughly enjoy spending my days beating them down. XD

The Cell was probably my favorite Stephen King book.

I like post apocalyptic novels, they even taught a class on post apocalyptic culture at my college.

I'm actually writing a comedy post apocalyptic screenplay. "Writing" being a strong word.

Hmm, Zombies scare me, well stupid zombies don't, but if there is a chance of a zombie being able to think, I don't want to deal with it. I'd be in the 'not surviving' catagory, unless I was in my hometown. It's isolated (a hundred kilometers from anything noteworthy) and theres boats. My area has a reasonably large number of paranoids with large gun/food/gas caches and I'm pretty friendly with them so thats helpful.

These are all in the 'I'm at home when this happens' camp, not in the 'I'm overseas and throughly screwed' camp.

In the case of a zombie attack, I'd be on a boat to a remote, unnamed island that is on a precious few maps. I think I'd be decently safe there for a while. Of course having supplies would be an issue, but if large parts of the population were dead, I could rummage through everyone elses stores (most people in my town only buy food every two weeks or so and keep fairly full pantries all year round). The gun thing could be an issue mostly because I've never held one, never mind shot one, but I'm hoping that the boat would be a feasible idea and I could get to my island.

In the event of nuclear winter, again with the isolated town thing. And if I die of radiation poisioning then I die.

In the event of twelve hours left, I'd want to spend it with my family, and if there was someone special in my life I'd be spending some time with them. And I'd be cooking a damned big final meal for everyone. Realistically the foods all going to go bad anyways, might as well use it.

If robots take over, I think we're screwed and I only hope they're friendly.

One way or the other, I'm happy my parents made me take survival training in my teens. For that reason, there is always an emergency kit good for 5 people for one week, a bow and arrow (my dad can hunt with them) and a well stocked pantry at my parents house. In my apartment, I'd be a little less better off, still with the emergency kit and well stocked pantry but no weapons other than kitchen knives and a sword that I barely know how to use.
The world is made for people who aren't cursed with self-awareness.

I do not jump to conclusions, I took a small step and there they were.

If it comes, I sure hope it is zombies or a nuclear apocalypse (I would prefer winter, because I like the cold, but any will do). Radiation dissipates to tolerable levels pretty quickly, and I have the knowledge and skills to survive a suddenly feudal age land, and I know all about killing zombies. I read the Zombie Survival Guide, and I have readied myself according to its guidelines. I am even in the process of acquiring a M1A1 Carbine, a weapon that I know how to use. If you expect zombies, buy one, its the best weapon for the job. Also get a crossbow, or some other weapon with a silencer. The best sidearm is a .22 magnum with Teflon coated bullets (light kick and quiet, goes right through the head,)silencer preferred.

Even those running dead can be killed, but your kill to death ratio would be more like 5:1 instead of 500:1. In such a situation the shotgun would be best, though the carbine would still be useful.

I would be VERY interested to learn if anyone has managed to figure out how to fire a gun without ever holding it. I have plans for this coming Valentines day.

I think I'd be a little better off than the rest of you in the case of a Zombie Apocolypse.

Being a long-time resident of rural Manitoba, all I would have to do is put on my parka and toque, head outside and hijack a car, then drive for an hour out into the middle of the fucking blizzard-swept praires. Plenty of nice houses out there, I simply have to pick one and sit back. I seriously doubt any type of zombie (smart, stupid, or supernatural) isn't going to make it very far in outside in -40 celcius weather.

Of course, I'd have to make a couple trips into the city, or maybe one of the small towns in the area for supplies/gas/firearms. Some friends and I actually considered this a while ago, and in case of such an event we've got a route all planned out. Better safe than sorry.

I also just finished an excellent book kind of based on apocolypse, more on futuristic evil governments really. "Fairenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury is a great classic thats worth a read.

So when it all goes down, look me up. I'll be around Winnipeg somewhere. We'll hang out and shoot some zombies, good times.

Unfortunately, I have also arranged to meet my mates should the end be coming. It would be EXTREMELY difficult to contact each other during any chaos, especially if the lines went down.

It also raised the issue of who each of us would aim to save, what we'd do after any initial attack, etc. Having seen Cloverfield (Awesome, see it) recently, the whole issue of saving girlfriends/family came up.

Now, I'm no coward (lie), but if my little post-apocolyptic tribe runs into the army, I am doing whatever the hell they think is best. If they have a safe zone organized, I'm going straight there. If any of my friends still feel the need to save someone, they can go on alone. I'll be the one over by the escape pods or helicopters or whatever.

This may be the wrong area to discuss the movie, The Mist (Based on S Kings novel), but seeing as it is slightly apocolyptic, why not? I loved the whole group be trapped, and the division between the characters. Very Lord of the Flies. However, I think it must be noted, if you are some crazy zealot B####, and you are F###ING with the order of things, I will throw you into the mist, you will die, and I will P### on your bloodied corpse. During the movie, my friends and I were performing violent mime whenever that hag was on screen.

We did not like her.

I'd also hate to meet my English Teacher, mid-crisis. If he was a zombie, fine, I'd shoot him and get on with my life, however short it may be. If he is a "norm", I'd feel oblidged to help him... and that just wouldn't go down well.

Any other people you'd hate to run into, mid-crisis?

I know all about killing zombies. I read the Zombie Survival Guide, and I have readied myself according to its guidelines.

Where would I find this guide? Amazon? Ebay? Local library?

The Zombie Survival Guide, by Max Brooks. Your best bet is Amazon, though I got my copy cheaper from eBay.

It's an awesome book, though by the sounds of things its basically a long list of reasons as to why Toreshi would be dead and zombified by the end of the day tongue.gif

With regards to the topic, for anything other than Nuclear winter I'd run and hide myself away in the nearest reasonable "fortress" and get ready to sit on the sidelines for the next decade or so. Assuming I live through that, the world would quite literally be mine to roam as I pleased. I could live with that.

What would you do if you were still alive after the zombies attack?

I would think with the amount of literature about zombie uprisings, previously mentioned above, and other similar tracts on robots etc that humanity as a whole is well situated to throw off a mutant threat. Indeed, if, after all the intense study through the media and literature of zombies, we cannot kill them off, we deserve all we get.

Dawn of the dead, I am legend etc should be part of the training videos for the elite zombie response unit that i'm sure would be established, should the need arise.

QFT. The rage zombies from 28 days/weeks later are honestly the only zombies that I've ever really feared and they terrify me.

Personally, I'd flee to Australia and live with the aborigines. I'm not sure there's anything they can't survive...that is, unless the apocalypse happened because they stopped singing to that blasted mountain.

If I could pick the apocalypse scenario, I think I'd like to go with something a little weaker, like a massive EMP wiping out technology worldwide....I could survive that fairly easily.

I did wilderness survival, combat and firearms training with my uncles who are former military when I was a teenager, so I should be able to handle whatever I come across....I hope.

I guess when 2012 comes around, we'll know how good of a survive each of us are.
