Since I keep seeing the issue reappearing in different threads, lets keep the discussion to this thread. (I wil delete comments in all other topics that start into the blu-ray vs hddvd arguement)

So who wins the format war? Does anyone?

HDDVD is fully compatible with CH-DVD and vice versa.

And of HDDVD vs. BD.. HDDVD now has higher capacity, higher bitrate possiblility, some silly interactive features or sumtheng, LOTS cheaper, Not nearly as much crappy DRM as BD, and etc. HDDVD = clear winner.

I don't really prefer one more than the other as long as it does its job, but I believe that HDDVD will win.

I've seen both, I can't tell any real difference... 'course we WERE already watching 300 on a HD Plasma 42-inch TV... So whichever is cheaper... HD-DVD according to Twisted1616.

So apparently HD DVD is cheaper, can now hold 1 GB more on a disc and has less DRM issues. This can only mean one thing: Blu-Ray will win. Just look at the whole VCR thing where the worst option won too.

It's up to the porn industry to make the choice.

I believe Vivid has gone solely to HD DVD. I'd have to double check that, but I'm sure there was an article about that somewhere...

VHS won because of the porn industry chose it.

Blu-ray camp (i.e. SONY) has, in a fever of exemplary smartness [/irony], denied porn companies use of their tech. tongue.gif ... lol, tards.

But if you wanna go with such things then why not chose the equally invalid argument that Blu-ray will lose because SONY has a long history of pushing LOSING formats. tongue.gif

VHS vs BETAMAX is an old battle where the internet and free porn weren't as easy to aquire as nowadays. Porn will not have the final say in this battle.

I believe (and fear) that this battle will go on for a long time and that in the end, no clear victor will emerge. The real winners will be all the enterprises, the real losers will be the customer. smile.gif

But if there was to be a winner, i'm afraid that it'll be the Blu-ray, they have a great head start thanks to the ps3, it's even so bad that in europe (belgium) you cannot even find any decent hd-dvd players and can only buy blu-ray players & discs. Sony is throwing it's weight around hard in this fight. And god knows they need it biggrin.gif

False.
They are both being pirated as we speak.. erm.. type.... Easy or not makes no difference in that matter... And by what I've read they're very similarly difficult to crack... Though HDDVDs were cracked sooner.

I do believe this one is gonna go down simply by cost and more importantly Marketing.
And marketing is exactly what HDDVD is not doing much of now... Which is maby smart, yet maby not.. It's very debatable.
The HD interest is not yet completely kindled in the general public, and the marketing, if started ferociously now, could be simply wasted.. As when HD interest does rise in the public people will have been seeing ads for it for some time and may think it's yesterday's news. Starting advertising later on avoids that problem and saves the HDDVD camp lots of money as well.

And presumably there's an argument for starting marketing now.. ??

Oh also, you can get HDDVD/SDDVD discs.. playable on your DVD player now, and your HDDVD player later... I think they cost the same as a HDDVD movie alone.

I think that if there was a winner it would be BluRay because of its headstart and the fact that Blockbuster will be renting only BluRay and many other movie rental stores may follow suit.

Sony is the only one of the consortium {Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson}
who said they don't want the porn industry using blu-ray at least from what i can find

unless I missed a major HD DVD update hd cannot hold near the same amount of data that a blu-ray disc can
Blu can hold 25GB of data on a single layer disc ..HD can "only" hold 15gb

personally i prefer the one that holds MORE as my option.
also I like the fact that the ps3 is also a blu-ray player so you gets your gaming machine and a player

all of that said I wont be buying any of these as i think standard DVD's on a upconverting dvd player look better than fine on my 1080p big screen
and blowing the 500ish dollars for the option to spend more money to buy a disc is absurd.

yeah unless MS decides to liscence its 360 technology and allow others (Toshiba) to make 360 boxes but with built in HD DVD players cheep I'm thinking Blue Ray will win this, especially with the expcted price cut of the PS3 around summer time.

However I'm tempted in a bit to get one of those multiple use boxes (HD & Blu Ray) because when the HD format is "lost" those DVD's are gonna be CHEAP!

Booya!
