Who wants anime? If so, then you're in luck, for we have Anime of the Week. This week I bring you Peacemaker Kurogane.

QUOTE
It is the closing time of the chaotic Edo Era (Japan, 1603-1868). In this time, some young people make a breakthrough in this era.

It is the first year of Genji (1864)*, March. A spring where cherry blossoms scatter and dance in the air of Kyoto. A single young man knocks at the door of the headquarters of the Mibu Shinsengumi (the newly established Mibu team). His name was Ichimura Tetsunosuke, aged 15. His personality, as his name suggests, is Teppoudama*

Unlike his height, Tetsunosuke possesses great will power and hopes to join the Shinsengumi to avenge his parents. He is allowed to join the team on the condition that he can win against the talented swordsman Okita Souji*. And so, Tetsunosuke challenges Okita.

"I want to become stronger."
Tetsunosuke, getting back up and fighting back no matter how many times he gets knocked down, earns him the admiration of Kondou Isamu* who allows him to join. However, the "oni"* vice captain, Hijikata Toshizou* refused to let him join saying, "The Shingumi will not have someone joining for vengeance."
One night, Tetsunosuke passes by the place where Okita was hiding and witnesses a ferocious battle. Hijikata leaves Tetsunosuke saying "Joining the Shingumi is just a way of becoming a demon."
Tetsunosuke stood still as he took in the painful reality that he must hold a sword and hurt people to become stronger.

However, in the falling rain, he asks Hijikata with Great Spirit, "I will not be afraid of demons. Make me into a demon." And so, it was how Tetsunosuke got consent from Hijikata to join the Shingumi.

Tetsunosuke faces many dark and cold battles as he worries about and watches over his brother Tatsunosuke who suffers from gastralgia. Together with Souji and the others of the Shingumi, they make a breakthrough in the closing of the Edo Era as an apprentice of Hijikata Toshizou...

I found this one quite enjoyable. It was cute and funny, with a little bit of action thrown in from time to time. I watched this in both dub and sub, and found both to be very well done.

This show is also great for playing the Chick or Dude? game. Witness the guy near the back on the left... yes, that IS male. And badass to boot!

What's sad is that I've watched enough anime that I already knew that was a guy, even though I've never seen this show. tongue.gif

Yes Prod, while you are correct in that is a guy, said character is a spy and dresseS up as a chick for a lot of the series, plus he has a sister who looks almost exactly like him. So it does get confusing.

I was talking about Okita, actually. And yeah, Prod, I've watched enough to know, too. Usually.

Today is a day for Anime happy.gif
What's even more twisted is that homosexuality was very common amongst samurai, since higher class warriors quite often had a 'girlish' look. For real. As in real life authentic history.

Also it makes me think of Kenshin (the series not the really badass movie) and Samurai Seven.

Ah yes, Kenshin was a sweet series. The ending however really let me down and pissed me off.

Ever seen the movie Taboo, yoshida? That covers that topic pretty well. *mischievious grin*

Nico and Pyro, can you be greater Otakons than me? If so, slice my head in half right now. wink.gif
About Kenshin: never saw the ending, only heard of it. First two DVD's of the series are the only one sold in Holland (eventho the second one leaves a pretty major cliffhanger). All I heard was that Tomoe's little brother killed Kenshin's gf after which Kenshin died of a disease. That'd be a bummer indeed.
Anyway, I like the movie better for it's serious nature and more adult character.

Wonder when Peacemaker Kurogane will be aired in NL?

Hell, for all I know, it hasn't even aired here yet. I just randomly picked up volume 1 & 2 of the DVD's one day cause I liked the cover art. It turned out to be a decent series, so i'm not going to complain biggrin.gif.

Eh, I used to be a really scary otaku-fangirl. But I got over it. Still like and watch anime, but it's not the be-all end-all of my life anymore.

The OAV of Kenshin is actually really dark, very good. It's all about his past, and the animation style isn't nearly so cutesy. Plus you don't have Kaoru in the background trying to stop Kenshin from going berserk and being badass.

Never, probably. It's not the sort of anime they show on tv here. It's not for kids and there's no game attached which needs selling.
